So lets entertain the idea that this turns out to be genuine:

How would you take advantege of this knowledge?

The patent is not awarded yet, the 1MW plant will be ready in Oct, 2011, and production of the 10kW units will start at that factory in Greece.

I've wasted at least 10 hours looking for information about it on the web, and I can't say it conclusively that its a fraud. Also it might be and appeal to authority, but Brian Josephson http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_David_Josephson ,who is a noble prize winning physicist thinks its genuine.

Some talk about it on Physicsforums by him:

This can't just be written off as pseudoscience. This is not as if Rossi is a fly by night kind of individual. He has been working on nickel and hydrogen reactions since the 90's.
It sounds as if he found a grey area between chemical and nuclear reactions.
If it helps at all:
>Essén and Professor Emeritus at Uppsala University Sven Kullander, also chairman of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences’ Energy Committee, both participated on 29 March as observers at a new trial in Bologna of the so-called ‘energy catalyzer’, which could be based on cold fusion, or LENR, Low Energy Nuclear Reaction.

They have a secret catalyst that makes the reaction possible. Since only they know what the catalyst is, nobody else can duplicate their results.

Instead of publishing the information in a journal or something, they're trying to commercialize it.

I am incredibly skeptical of these two. They don't behave like scientists, they behave like fraudsters and con artists.

Buying nickel might not be that great idea, the 10kW unit used less than 100g in 3 or so months, so after some rough calculation 10 TW power would take less then 100000 tons of nickel and worldwide production was 1.6 million tons, so what it would use is not significant enough to affect the price.

I'm not sure if you're familiar with how the patent process works, but its in progress.
Also how would you go about this, if you spent your own money on the research, no major paper would publish your results, pretty much the only course they could take is build the thing, and sell it.

>Defkalion Green Technologies is planning on opening a factory in October that will produce 300,000 units a year that will be sold in the Greek and Baltic markets. Other factories will most likely be opening in other parts of the world. Defkalion estimates that a reactor for your home would cost approximately 3500 Euros and the generator to convert the heat to electricity would cost an additional 1500 Euros. This is a very favorable price considering the massive energy and fuel savings an individual will reap after buying a unit. For example, an average home may use a few hundred dollars worth of electricity a month and may also pay substantial amounts of money for natural gas or fuel oil. In one year the unit could pay for itself. However, with any technology the cost will come down dramatically in time.

>> Anonymous 04/10/11(Sun)09:32 No.2864027
if you want "free" energy you could just collect ambient heat. the air has shitloads of energy in it because it's all just wooshing around at about 280-300 kelvin in most places. shit's hot yo.

does anyone else think it's crazy that air conditioning uses so much energy just to REMOVE energy from the air? then it takes that energy and tries to dump it into a higher energy system (the external hot air) by compressing the fuck out of it. what the fuck? this is why the world needs engineers; to sort out fucked up things like this.
>> Anonymous 04/10/11(Sun)10:04 No.2864135
It appears that hope is fading as to the legitimacy of this device. I don't quite understand.
The more people who examine the device, the better. So far, those who have examined it have all come to the same conclusion. This appears to be a nuclear reaction of some sort.
The major problem with the patent is that they do not know the process as to how it works. They know what conditions must be met, but the actual process is still a mystery.
No journal or patent would touch this without an explanation, and they won't hand out their work without some guarantee that it won't be stolen.
This is why I believe they are acting in the way that they are.
>> Anonymous 04/10/11(Sun)10:14 No.2864169
>>2864027
I assume you know this, but you couldn't just collect ambient heat. Even with a cold resevoir at absolute zero you wouldn't be able to extract much work.
>> Anonymous 04/10/11(Sun)10:18 No.2864188
>>2864169

the main point really is that in air conditioning we use energy to remove energy (from the air to cool it), which seems backwards. if we could just use the energy from the air itself it doesn't really matter how much work that energy can do; what matters more is that we're just using up that energy and making the air cooler for free.

the main reason it is almost inevitable that tokyo will have blackouts this summer following the power plant failures is just the massive amount of energy demanded by air conditioning. as i said, the whole thing seems backwards to me.
>> Anonymous 04/10/11(Sun)10:19 No.2864191
If what Brian Josephson writes about Rossi paying 1 million euro to CERN for them to examine his reactor is true, then that investigation should settle it, because if there is any kind of nuclear reaction going on, the guys at CERN will find it. Also, from reading descriptions of the independent testing, a fraud or chemical reaction seems unlikely, so some optimism may actually be reasonable.

clarifying that I remain skeptical untile further proofs are shown, this thing is highly promising.
the science behind it exists. Focardi, along with others, has worked for years on Ni-H fusion, he published papers and the results of experiments where he obtained the fusion.
Others not related to him have done the same too.
He and Piantelli have a patent for a NI-cu reactor, and the rossi focardi reactor is based on that design( I have understood that some of the problems for the patent derive from this).
the papers have been published and anyone can reproduce their work.
the problem was that most of the energy was released as gamma radiation and not heat, and the conditions for it working were extremely complex, so it wasn't viable for production.
Rossi seems to have solved this problem, with his secret catalyst.

the experiments show that the machine produces huge amounts of energy and the experiments were devised to exclude some hidden source of energy, so it must come from the reactor.

maybe it'll turn out to be a hoax, but if that's the case it would be an incredibly complex and pointless hoax.

It's called industrial R&D and if you let your peer tear the methodology apart and replicate the process you've just violated the NDA and are going to be fired if you're lucky, or sued for a gigabillion megadollars.

Peer review happens in academia, which is largely nonprofit. Inventions are not academia, they are entrepeneurship and for-profit.

If he invented a much CHEAPER form of energy than what is there already, all he needs to do is patent the device he invented. The only way you'll be able to take advantage of it without paying him then is to make your own. And you wouldn't be able to sell the power generated. As for the specific reactions involved, he could live off of the papers and books he could write and would basically be a gillionaire for just the discovery. So as the man said,
1)Patent the discovery and machine.
2) Peer review the fuck out of it.
3) Build plant with finished product.
4) Don't accidentally blow up the world cuz you didn't test your machine correctly.

they have made experiments in controlled environments with independent reviewers, who controlled and examined all the quipment, with the exception of the small reactor chamber. Thus the energy produced could only come from there, and the amount of energy produced is too big for any non-nuclear reaction. And in any case it's a cheap way to produce energy, regardless of whether it's nuclear or not.

as for how it works, there is a paper published by rossi and focardi, and papers published by others which describe a reactor very similar to the one used. The only difference is the catalyzer used by rossi, which is a secret until the patent is approved.

You can't just make heat go from a cold place to a hot place willy nilly (which is what an Airconditioner is doing the second it makes the temperature of the room even half a degree below the ambient temperature outside).

Well, that is what patents are for. They tried to get a patent but were rejected because they would not file the information required to actually confirm/deny the process.

What do you think about the hypothesis(I made up just now), that they've put some fuel withing that "insulated" one and burned(or catalytically oxidized) it, while mixing the gases into the water vapors (or using the 300w to pressurize them) ? LOL, I bet the gramps swedes did not check the "insulation" of the fourth one before running it, and let themselves be fooled by an assumption, that it is the same as the other three (I wonder, why would there otherwise be as much as 3 of them, if not in an attempt to strengthen such impression, hmm?).

>On February 10 and 11, 2011, Levi et al. (University of Bologna) performed another test of the Rossi device.

Duration of test: 18 hours
Flow rate: 3,000 L/h = ~833 ml/s.
Cooling water input temperature: 15°C
Cooling water output temperature: ~20°C
Input power from control electronics: variable, average 80 W, closer to 20 W for 6 hours

The temperature difference of 5°C * 833 ml = 4,165 calories/second = 17,493 W. Observers estimated average power as 16 kW. A 5°C temperature difference can easily be measured with confidence.

3,000 L/h is 793 gallons/h, which is the output of a medium-sized $120 ornamental pond pump.

The control electronics input of ~80 W is in line with what was reported for tests before Jan. 14. Input power was high on that day because there was a problem with cracked welding, according to the Levi report.

18 hours * 16 kW = 288 kWh = 1,037 MJ. That is the amount of energy in 26 kg of gasoline (7.9 gallons). Given the size and weight of the device, this rules out a chemical source of energy.

A good confirmation of their process would be to examine the composition of the nickel fuel before using it. Stick it in the machine, let it run for a good long time then look at the composition afterwards.

but i heard he only gets the money if the 1MW plant works. and he pays for that plant out of his own pocket.
if it's a scam it's not a very well thought out one.

So is it fair to say that if this works it will change everything?

Considering this is cold fusion we are talking about, hell yes it will.

It will be practically free energy.

It would be the end of global warming, much of powerty and other added benefits.
Humanity would rise to another level on the ladder to space.

This provided that the method woudn't be entirely ridiculous, like requiring massive amounts of rare earth minerals and prodicing low power output.

Where does it say that he's paying CERN 1 million euros to test it thoroughly?

Because if that's true that lends quite a bit of credibility.

Yes, it will revolutionize the field of scamming.

Few more archive requests needed.

This would be a fun thread to dig up if this shit actually works.

Also would like to see where it's stated he's paying CERN that 1M euros.

Looks more like an oversized silver double dildo than a fusion generator.

Or if it doesn't work it would be a good thread to link when another cold fusion claim comes under the spotlight.

>Ni-H fusion
What???

Nickel is heavier than iron. Iron is also the point where fusion reactions become endothermic. Nickel isn't fusing with anything without some energy present.

that's the thing with LENR reactions, they seem to violate conventional nuclear physics.

that's the reason why the issue causes so much butthurt.

It's rather insesible to think that oh there's 2k+ isotopes of the elments and the only positive reaction possible is fission of iron+ or fusion of iron- elements.

Doesn't know the definition of fusion.

An english interview with Rossi.
He says towards the end that "My life is at stakes".
He says that he put all his money in this, and only gets paid if the thing works.

If its a scam, its by far the most convincing I've ever seen.
