'Sup, /lit/. Remember that huge archive of books, in the rapidshit links, with the shitty organizing? Well, I manually organized them all by author last name, removed as many dead, corrupt, or nonexistant archives that I could find, and the grand total comes to 2,179 ebooks total. Took four days, but it's so much easier to search now.

Oh, and the old archive was on rapidshare, but rapidshare is shit, so I used mediafire instead. Uploading on megaupload too, just 'cause.

By author last name...

A-B: http://www.mediafire.com/?myzjghad1m5

C-E: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?dnn1mmzgkcg

F-I: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?igi4ndwthzj

J-L: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?idzdvdn5ytj

M-Q: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?lmtmtzlwlgd

R-V: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?dn2tz5yjzze

W-Z: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?y2niznrjmnn (including anonymous and varied authors, and Star Wars and Warhammer franchise books, so you can focus on them if you like them or delete them if you don't)

I'm gonna post megaupload links later. Enjoy a non-shitty lithursday/bookchan/etc ebook archive, /lit/.

It was for my own reasons. I really, really hate chaotically disorganized files and I'm gonna buy an ereader in a few weeks. Oh, and I have a massive amount of free time at college (hence having four days to do this.)

If it takes an extra half-hour to upload to media sharing sites for lit, why not?

The lion's share of the books are old sci-fi or fantasy genre novels (think Philip K. Dick, Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov...et cetera.)

But there are a lot of other books, too - almost all of the Discworld series, for example, and I think most or all of Stephen King's work, just to name a few off the top of my head. Some books on programming and such, too...there's all sorts of random crap.

Right click a .jpg image. Choose Open With...

Find WinRAR. Select it. Uncheck "use this program to open files of this type from now on" or whatever.

1. Extract every α->β pack from mediafire to a single folder
2. Open Notepad
3. type:
>ren *.jpg *.rar (no ">" sign)
4. File->Save as...-> All files. Save the document as whatever.bat inside the folder where you extracted everything
5. Go to that folder. Doubleclick whatever.bat
6. Wait a few secs.
6. You can now open everything with WinRar.

You will need WinRAR (or any .rar compatible compression program, 7-Zip would work) to open them and a .pdf viewer, ConvertLIT GUI or something else to convert .lit files, and Word or Word Document Viewer or something to open .doc files.

Or you could download a program like Calibre that will convert them all to whatever format you prefer. Up to you.

It would take an astronomically long time to find .pdfs of every single book here. I tried to quality-control as best I could as far as looking for "dead" archives, but there's no way in hell I have enough time to download this many ebooks one at a time in .pdf format only. Besides, other people might prefer other formats.

I did try to include every different format that I could when I had more than one of the same book, I only got rid of duplicates. So a bunch of these archives has the same book but in various formats.

Look, I'm not taking the time to convert them all to ANY format because no matter what format I change them to, there will be someone saying that another format is better. Additionally, conversion has the possibility of causing formatting errors and other crap. I left them in whatever format they were already in.

IF YOU WANT THEM ALL IN ONE FORMAT:
-Extract every book (or just, you know, the books you want)
-Convert them in Calibre
-???
-Profit.

Yeah, that's the weird bit. It's like the good reader formats are too middle-of-the-road for computer apps. Even Okular with it's multitude of backends doesn't know what epub is.

I used to prefer pdf, but now it's the worst format for me. Since my reader likes epub, txt, rtf, mobi, etc. I can easily convert from doc, lit, etc without the layout getting in the way--just about anything but pdf, and certainly everything that is common.

CBR is just a zip with different extension. When I get a cbr-based comic I just rename it to *.zip and extract the files.

>>619767
No, I mean something organized like OP did. Maybe even more:
-- Folders with first letter of author's last name
---- Folders with author's full name
------ If single book, book goes here;
------ If it's part of a series or collection, folder with series name
-------- Book goes here, name starting with the number in the series

I think it's just a matter of finding the right website to handle this and sharing the login info. This way anyone could add more books or upload better versions.

No, and one or two others. I kept it in for consistency's sake and to prevent people asking where the folder was.

Would anon like it if the next version of this archive had subfolders by author name?

If so, should I strip author name and such from the filenames?
>> Anonymous 05/02/10(Sun)21:29 No.622674
>>622490
It's not a big deal to me, but if you do, removing the author names is not a bad idea.

While you're at it, I suggest fixing attributions. Some of them are messed up as indicated by a few posts in the thread.
>> Anonymous 05/02/10(Sun)23:43 No.623140
>>622674
I've been trying to fix errors as they're pointed out.

My thinking is, it's best while it's sorted to remove the author names, but if you send any unsorted it starts to get messy again, so it's possibly best to just leave them in even if they're in sorted subfolders, since the filenames don't really hurt anything.

The holy bible has literary significance. The poetic Elizabethan language of the King James version is enough reason to read it.

OP here. Surprised this thread still lives, I thought the bump limit was passed. I'll find an online version of the Bible sometime, but I'm too lazy to do it during finals week. I agree that it should be in there - it has too much literary significance even if it is full of shit.

I mean, how many books can you think of that reference the bible at some point?

Sage because it's already on the front page.

OP here. Working on v1.5. I'll extract those instead of keeping them in the .jpg, since it works for me but apparently not others.

Also working on a few duplicates and typos, and a few books I've added.

And I'm sorting them into subfolders by author and then by series, but I'm keeping the filenames as they are.

Anything else I should fix, try to add, or anything else?
>> Anonymous 05/04/10(Tue)21:43 No.631021

I'd like to see more of the non-D&D books by D&D authors (Salvatore and Weis come to mind.) The problem is they're better than D&D and their independent work is better.

It's probably not an easy request to deal with, so don't feel bad if you're just plain not interested. I might post links later, though, if I come across any.

PS. I say take your time with it. No need to rush.

the books you have added maybe put in a seperate upload also so people can just download them instead of downloading all of a-c for example for 2 books

if you can't be bothered happy for what i have anyways

Considering I won't devote more than ten minutes or so to searching for any given book online anyway, if someone wanted a specific book, they could just download it themselves, I think - W-Z included links to bookchan's most popular sources.

Sorry, distracted, forgot what else I was gonna say: I mostly asked to see if /lit/ thought there were any books that they'd like to see in a big archive, not any book they'd like personally. =P
